PRACTICAL SELLING GUIDE
Confirm your authority to sell
Ask our team which documents are needed for your particular sale before collection is booked. Have identification and available vehicle and purchase records ready for that discussion. If you are selling for a relative, business or estate, explain that early so the correct authority can be checked. Do not assume that having the keys alone settles who can sell the car.
Gather the vehicle details
Have the make, model, year, registration status and any available purchase or registration records to hand. Explain missing paperwork when you enquire rather than waiting until pickup. Tell the team about finance or an unresolved insurance claim and resolve your authority to sell before proceeding. Identification documents should be discussed directly with the team; the quote enquiry only needs your contact and vehicle details.
Agree on a record of the sale
Confirm the vehicle, agreed amount, included parts, payment method and collection arrangements. Keep a written sale record. Service NSW lists vehicle identification, sale date and time, and the buyer and seller details among the information for a proof of sale. Follow its current checklist for the transaction you are completing.
Check the applicable registration and plate process
A notice of disposal and registration cancellation serve different purposes. Service NSW says that, for a sale to a wrecker, a notice of disposal is needed if the vehicle is sold with number plates. It gives a different process for a vehicle sold without plates or one that has been written-off. Check the official instructions that match your circumstances, including personalised plates.
Keep your records after collection
Keep the sale record and any registration transaction receipt. Remove toll tags and update the vehicle on your toll account. Ask your insurer about updating the relevant policy. If the car was formally written-off, use the dedicated Service NSW guidance rather than treating it as an ordinary registration transfer.
